Nordic Semiconductor Announces the nRF54 Series, Renewing Its Leadership in Bluetooth Low Energy
2023-04-13 15:57

[Introduction] Nordic Semiconductor announced the nRF54H20, the first product in its fourth-generation multi-protocol System-on-Chip (SoC) family. The nRF54 series continues the company's pioneering technological advantages in the field of Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE). Innovative hardware architecture. nRF54H20 belongs to the "H" branch nRF54H series in the nRF54 series.

Nordic Semiconductor, which has a leading share in the Bluetooth low-power market, continues its commitment to innovation and releases a new fourth-generation low-power wireless SoC-nRF54H20, the first product in the nRF54 series. nRF54H20 is ideal for disruptive IoT applications requiring high processing power, outstanding energy efficiency and state-of-the-art security.

Nordic Semiconductor, a leader in high-performance, low-power IoT wireless connectivity, has announced the nRF54H20, the first product in its fourth-generation multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC) family. The nRF54 series continues the company's pioneering technological advantages in the field of Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE). Innovative hardware architecture. nRF54H20 belongs to the "H" branch nRF54H series in the nRF54 series.

nRF54H20 supports Bluetooth 5.4 and future Bluetooth new specifications, as well as LE Audio, Bluetooth mesh, Thread, Matter, etc. This product will become the basis for a new round of innovative IoT terminal products. It has advanced function combinations and can realize Complex end-product functional requirements that were previously unfeasible.

Svenn-Tore Larsen, CEO of Nordic Semiconductor, said: "We have brought together decades of ultra-low power wireless expertise to create the nRF54 series. The nRF54H20, the first SoC device in our fourth generation Bluetooth low energy solution, represents not only Nordic's This is an important development milestone and will enable customers to build end products that are more advanced and efficient than what is available today."

Svein-Egil Nielsen, Chief Technology Officer/Executive Vice President of R&D and Strategy at Nordic Semiconductor, said: "Disruptive products like the nRF54H20 are achieved through long-term R&D investment and hard work, and Nordic has always been willing to invest in these long-term R&D efforts. New The product has received very positive early feedback. Nordic customers can rest assured that our development blueprint for next-generation IoT solutions is very ambitious. nRF54H20 is just one of the SoC products, and we will continue to launch more products that far exceed customer expectations. solution."

High performance processing capability

The nRF54H20 features multiple Arm® Cortex®-M33 processors and multiple RISC-V coprocessors clocked at up to 320 MHz, each optimized for a specific type of workload.

The dedicated application processor in the nRF54H20 has twice the processing power (2x CoreMark) of the application processor in the current flagship nRF5340 SoC, and its computing resources are supported by integrated memory consisting of 2MB of non-volatile memory and 1MB of RAM. The high level of integration of this SoC product allows developers to design more sophisticated products by replacing multiple components such as application MCU, external memory and wireless SoC with only one highly compact device. In addition to advanced wearables, smart home, medical and LE Audio applications, the nRF54H20 SoC is well suited for applications requiring sophisticated machine learning (ML) capabilities and support for edge sensor fusion.

The nRF54H20 features several new digital and analog interfaces, including a high-performance external memory interface (400 MBps), high-speed USB (480 Mbps), two I3C peripherals, a CAN FD controller, and a 14-bit ADC. In addition to these advanced interfaces, nRF54H20 also integrates many other analog and digital interfaces.

Extending Ultra-Low Power Wireless Technology

Featuring a new class-leading multi-protocol 2.4 GHz radio, the nRF54H20 SoC is the world's first to receive 1 Mbps Bluetooth Low Energy signals with -100 dBm RX sensitivity. Coupled with up to 10 dBm TX power, nRF54H20 provides sufficient link budget to enhance robustness and extend communication distance. Built on Nordic's decades of ultra-low power wireless expertise, the radio RX consumes half the power of the nRF5340. For applications that are primarily receivers, such as earbuds and wearables, this low-power feature can be used in more compact battery applications or to help extend battery life.

State-of-the-art security

The nRF54H20 will be one of the most secure low-power multi-protocol SoCs on the market, with advanced security designed for PSA Level 3 certification, the highest level of Platform Security Architecture (PSA) certification for IoT safety standard. The SoC supports secure services such as secure boot, secure firmware updates, and secure storage, and has a secure coprocessor that protects against side-channel attacks at the hardware level, as well as anti-tamper sensors that can detect ongoing attacks and take appropriate action.

Kjetil Holstad, executive vice president of product management at Nordic Semiconductor, said: "The nRF54H20 is a breakthrough and major technological achievement that deserves to be called the successor of the nRF51, nRF52 and nRF53 series. We expect the nRF54 series to once again revolutionize low-power wireless technology. Technology. This is not just an evolution of the company's wireless SoC product line, but an important change. We look forward to customers using the nRF54 series to build the next wave of advanced complex IoT end products."
